Sega announces Shenmue 1&2 HD and a new Sakura Taisen game

read the details online.

I’m surprised this was the first announcement of Megadrive Mini because I could swear I actually saw a Japanese site talk about it some days ago, and it wasn’t on April 1st so I don’t think it was a joke. Article was titled something like “Sega gets back into the hardware business” only to reveal they’re actually talking about a Megadrive Mini. Maybe it was supposed to be a leak, or a joke article which later came true. It had like 10k RTs too.

I actually like most remasters. True, it’s better to see new games, and depending on when they get released it can feel like you “wasted” time playing the original version. If a remaster or port with new content gets released only a few years later, it sucks. I know I’m happy I haven’t played Shining Resonance when I see Shining Resonance Refrain is coming out(Actually I’m happy I never played Shining Resonance period, its a good small budget game but there’s much better games to spend time on.) That’s also why I did a single 100% coop run of P5 and haven’t done a new game +, in case they announce a enhanced version. But remasters are cool. It makes it easier to replay games, and make them discover to kids in your family. Assuming you have the money to buy them.

Anyway, first off about Shenmue. I’m a huge Shenmue fan. It’s the first game we got on Dreamcast along with a demo CD, when I was in last years of elementary. It’s the game that broadened my English knowledge after learning the basics with stuff like Wonder Boy 3, Slayers, Kare Kano, Pokemon, ALTTP or FF6. I used to know every line in the game. When I first played Shenmue 2 in 2002 or so, I already knew there would never be a sequel so I was quite disheartened when I reached the end. I clung to hope over the years but by 2009 or something I completely gave up seeing the end of Shenmue in this lifetime. Last time I replayed Shenmue1&2 was in 2006 or something, I had heard about the duck race/medals subquest and the russian? girl bonus fight etc on the net, something I had never discovered, so decided to redo both games just to do it.
I remember thinking Yu Suzuki should just release a novel & reading an interview where he said he doesn’t want to. When Shenmue 3 actually got announced, I was really happy but at the same time full of doubt. My crave for Shenmue 3 just disappeared over the years. I didn’t back the kickstarter either, though that’s mostly because my favorite game journalists (RIP Nolife) convinced me it was weird. Plus there’s the fact that even this 3rd episode won’t be the end of the story. If 3 doesn’t sell we’ll just get back to square one, and sadly I don’t think it’ll sell.

I’ll probably get Shenmue 1&2 on PC though. At least that way I can replay it without worrying about the PAL dreacmast’s horrible lens dying.

Everyone on the net says Shenmue is a cult game, but once 1&2HD is out I doubt most people will actually buy it. In late 2000 or so when more and more games got out of Japan, I used to think the era of myths from the 90(it was even before too but I was born then) with people assuming a japan only game they saw in a magazine is automatically a masterpiece, would be over. Over the years I think this actually became way worse.  I don’t think most people who praise Shenmue or Sakura Taisen on the net actually played them, and I don’t think most of them will actually spend money to buy these news ones.

Most people won’t buy Shenmue once they see some popular reviewers or streamers call it boring. I myself often call Ryu ga Gotoku the successor of Shenmue, but both series are strongly different. In Yakuza, you always have action and billions of things to do anytime. Shenmue is a slow paced detective like game where you need to question tons of people and do a lot of backtracking in small areas (compared to today’s standards), with most fights being QTE only, and with only a few “free battle” fights where you’ll get to play Virtua Figther. While extremely slow paced and with a lot of time to do side things, your time is also restricted during many arcs of the games, with stuff like the forklift race and work in the 3rd CD of Shenmue 1, or all the part time jobs and later book training every morning during a big part of Shenmue 2. (Book training and sakura petal catching training which I had completely mastered last time I replayed it)

As for Sakura Taisen, I myself am one of those “fake” fans. I’ve known the series since I was a kid. It’s knowledge of Sakura Taisen and Sega AM7/Overworks which made me interested in Eternal Arcadia after seeing its trailer on Ruliweb, and later on Senjou no Valkyria. I watched all the anime versions too. But I actually never played a single game, except Hanagumi Taisen Columns 2. In my opinion very few people on the English side of the net who praise Sakura Taisen actually ever played any of the games, not even 5. Things are better on the french side though, not counting me. Maybe I’m pessimistic but I think the new Sakura Taisen will only sell well in Japan where it has always been popular with stuff like the musicals. ST5 released in 2005 in Japan but they’ve maintained the license since then. They recently did LINE stamps too(which I put as OP pic). Sakura Taisen got many apparitions over the years in tons of stuff. Its characters were in Projet x Zone. In collabs with huge mobage like Grandad Fantasy. It was added to SRW for the first time in 2017, though in the SRW mobage, and they just added Paris Kagekidan on April 2018. There was the Sakura Taisen Kanadegumi spinoff manga too, with a girl being the main character& an all male team. And there was a mobage as well, which the Sakura pic above is from, which closed some time ago.

Even if they release some kind of 1-5 compilation,(which would be a must buy if it’s done well, including stuff like the anime sequences from the saturn version of 1&2) I don’t think it’ll sell outside Japan. I think it’ll be the same problem as Shenmue. And again, most people will say it’s boring, discovering most of the games are like a VN.

If there’s new characters, I’m really looking forward to which seiyuu they’ll pick. And if they’ll restart live shows/musical again.

Maybe I’ll end up getting Shenmue 3 anyway. I hope you’ll be able to transfer your save from Shenmue 1&2 HD. I still have my Dreamcast VMs too.

Edit: Fun fact, late August 2018 I watched an online friend playing through the last parts of Shenmue 2 and all the love I have for the game suddenly came back haha. I’m more hyped than ever for 3.

Hokuto Ga Gotoku Announced for PS4 by Yakuza Studio

Who would’ve thought we’d get Hokuto no Ken Shenmue one day. I’m really excited, one more big reason to get a PS4. I wonder what the story’s will be. I hope the others characters besides Ken will have their original voices, except for those whoose voice actors passed away sadly. I guess they’ll use the same cast as in Hokuto Musou.

I wonder what kind of minigames they’ll put in. Really looking forward to this

Looking forward to Yoru no Nai Kuni 2

I really liked 1’s story so this is the part I’m awaiting the most here. I hope they did a good job. While I never wrote a post about it, Yoru no Nai Kuni 1 really pleasantly surprised me with how it wasn’t just a random yuri story or a “gotta sacrifice someone to save the world” story that you’ve already seen in the first part of ToS or FF10.

I’m a bit disappointed there’s no male characters this time, as Simon, Arukado and Lloyd were all great characters in 1, and especially really funny. Speaking of that, I guess the monocle+rifle girl called Camilla Arukado is Arukado’s daughter? Because the magazines articles before 1’s release actually spoiled quite a bit of the game’s story, I refrained from watching anything this time, except a few PVs like the one above, as I wanted to check how the game runs on Switch. If Camilla is Arukado’s daughter, it’s pretty amazing he actually managed to get married, considering his personality. I hope Arukado 2 is as fun as her possible father. And I hope all the characters are well written and not just there to make a Yuri harem for Aloushe. Hoping we’ll get to play again as Arnath too.

One thing I’m looking forward to as well is the battle system. From what I’ve seen of it, I’m not too reassured about the changes they made compared to 1, but I’ll have to wait until actually playing the game before judging. One thing sure is I don’t like the “button mashing for more damage” thing during special attacks. I wouldn’t go so far as to say I loved YNNK1’s battle system, since it’s mostly the same as a Musou game, with its good and bad points, but I really liked how Arnath herself can’t deal good damage (at least until you unlock the bonus sword or at least the hammer) and how you really need to use your Servans well to defeat enemies. I really like battle systems where you indirectly control characters like that. Like in The Last Remnant or Ogre Battle March of The Black Queen. I need a good balance though, I’m not fan of having partial or no control when it’s coupled with elements which makes it a real chore, like getting a game over if the main character dies (Persona 3).
And judging from the PVs, it looks like Aroushe can do lotsof damage and has a lot more of attack possibilities, thanks to the girl you can tag along with. Seems using and manipulating your Servans isn’t the focus anymore. But I guess the girl you can bring along with you in battle is basically a Servan as well.
Planning to get the game in Japanese like 1, so looking forward to the release on August 31.

SRW OGMD GET

Finally got this after a year. Can’t buy too many games at release when you’re a poorf*g like me.

Bought the PS3 Japanese version since I don’t have a PS4. From what I’ve seen, the English translation of the PS4 SEA version is very bad grammatically speaking, but they managed to get most plot information correctly and there’s no misinterpretation.
Thanks to this if there’s something I don’t understand while playing the game in Japanese I’ll check people’s videos of the English version.

I heard some months ago they patched the game, translating the summaries of the past OG games too. I hope they did a good job. That way it’ll contribute to having better accurate info of SRW OG story in English.

Feels weird I’ll finally get to see how Raftclanz looks like in 3d animation.Well, unless I die before playing the stage where EKUSUTORAKUTA, MAKISHIMAMU! happens. Though if I die and manage to go to paradise I’ll see it anyway. Waited so long for this. I purposely didn’t watch most of the new units appearing in OGMD’s animations on Youtube so I can discover while playing.

It’s also the first time a SRW game I already played and finished is getting into OG. I played 4 and Alpha 1 on Alpha 1 on Dreamcast but didn’t finish them before playing OG1 on GBA.

SRW J got a special place in my game related memories since it’s what also made me discover a show that joined my list of favorites shows ever: Tekkaman Blade. (though technically I played W before, and saw it first in W, not J).

Also looking forward to Haken being in. Haven’t played Project X Zone 1 so haven’t him for years. Speaking  of which, I wonder if there will ever be another “Namco X Capcom”-like now that the games’ director, Morizumi, left Monolith Soft. I haven’t played PxZ 1 nor 2, but I guess Reiji and Xiamu’s story is over now. Starting with Namco x Capcom, then Mugen no Frontier, Mugen no Frontier EXCEED, and then PxZ 1&2. That’s 5 games in total.  Would be nice if the other Mugen no Frontier characters got in OG as well. And the Masoukishin ones too. (Especially Circuit kun and Elisha, I’m sure they’ll put int at least those two)

They’re releasing stamps for LINE

Still waiting for the day it gets into SRW

This is probably the game franchise I like the most I actually never played one of the main games of. Only watched the animes, played Hanagumi Taisen Columns and watched siblings play some of 3.
I’ve also always been a big fan of Team Shinobi/AM7/Overwork/Sega Wow ever since I was a kid and probably the first video game development studio I learned of. The team’s staff changed over the decades and I honestly can’t tell who worked on what, but they always made masterpieces. From Alex Kidd&Shinobi&Bare Knuckle to Eternal Aracdia&Senjou no Valkyria.

Still one of the funniest scenes ever.

I remember playing this a lot of years ago. It was really fun. It had a surprisingly good story too. I remember not finishing it but my brother did.

It’s around those years I also played Aquaplus’s Tenerezza on PC, and Napple Tale on Dreamcast. That was good times. They’re all pretty great and you should check them out. I should replay Tenerezza one of these days as I never finished it. I did finish Napple Tale though, I’m pretty proud of it. Mostly thanks to a guide on Gamefaqs.
Definitely do no play Napple Tale if you have a fear of clowns though.

Looking forward to Persona 5

My body was not ready for Persona Lupin The Third edition. This is gonna be so much fun. Apparently the hero is voiced by Fukuyama Jun. I think the Japanese entertainment industry should contract less the same voice actors all the time and give more chance to newcomers, instead of always betting on money. They chose Fukuyama san cuz they know all his fangirls and fanboys gonna buy the game now.  Anyway, it feels like phantom thieves are in fashion again in Japan, with all the new Lupin The Third things besides the usual yearly ova, stuff like Rhythm Thief, anime adaptations of Kaitou Joker, Kaitou Kid, and now this. Kinda like idols. Idols exist for decades in Japan, but these past years a lot of companies noticed all the money they can milk from little girls’ parents and otaku, and all started their own idol themed thing. I think they noticed when AKB started making a lot of money, so around 7, 8 years ago,and with Idolxm@s ten years ago. So since around 2005.

Dai ni ji SRW OG clear!

2nd og srw clear

It was nice. I think I’m gonna wait till I learn a bit more Kanji to do a second run so I can read more. I’m happy I decided to buy a ps3 and import a SRW for the first time, it motivated me a lot in my quest to learn Japanese, and I learned quite a lot while playing it. Pretty funny how the 147 kills I got with Masaki are only from the La Gias part of the game, and that I didn’t use him at all when he rejoined in order to put Arieru and Ibis in the top. I decided to fully upgrade the Hyperion once I got it because I was impressed by it’s attack animations and then Ibis+ Sleigh never got hit again and killed everything.

SRW Z Clear!

Kei is my top ace. I love Orguss. Next up are Rand, Garrod, Loran and Touga. As I was playing it, I read the Getter Robo manga, watched Orguss, Gravion and a bit of Daitarn 3. Had already seen the most recent shows in it like Turn A, but I haven’t seen the oldest ones like Baldios, God Sigma, etc. Also I ended up finishing the game without watching The Big O. The stuff that happens is so confusing anyway I don’t think it particularly spoiled me the show.

Next up is 2nd SRW OG I hope.
