Tomino Yoshiyuki Q&A at Japan Expo 2019, July 6

if you haven’t read it yet, here’s the article with my impressions on the first G-Reco compilation movie and the July 5 Q&A.

You can find other Tomino related events or interviews I translated in the past on this page.

Director Tomino held an around 30 minutes long Q&A on July 6, the third day of Japan Expo 2019. When he stepped on stage along with the MC and the translator, they explained how this was supposed to be a panel. What happened is, Tomino told Japan Expo’s staff beforehand how it’s his first time visiting France, so he doesn’t feel like talking about himself or his career, etc. Instead, he wanted to hear the audience speak. He wanted to hear our opinions on his works, answer our questions and chat with us. So they decided on holding a Q&A instead.

There were so many questions, I wouldn’t have been able to listen to all the answers if I concentrated on taking notes. So I just wrote down everything in my head. As such it’s possible I forgot certain parts or merged certain answers together. And I’ll update the post if I remember more.

Gundam G no Reconguista 1st Compilation Movie Premiere and Director Tomino Q&A at Japan Expo 2019

(Needless to say, the feature image is a screen from the TV series version. I like Ringo a lot, though that doesn’t mean anything in a series where every character is awesome)

The first G Reco compilation movie had its world premiere at Japan Expo 2019 on July 5. Director Tomino Yoshiyuki also participated in a Q&A after the movie. He answered questions from the audience and revealed more on the upcoming movies.

Note that there’s another panel with Director Tomino happening on July 6 which I’m planning to cover as well.

Nolife’s Tomino and Yoshida G Reco interview

nolife g reco tomino interview earth won't last more than 300 years

Back in June, Nolife did a special gundam night, talking about the various aspect of the franchise: shows, games, figurines etc. Nolife exists for 8 years now. It’s the only French channel I watch regularly for years now. There’s only crap on tv now. It’s either reality shows, tv shows with the episodes not airing chronologically, retarded debates brewing racism, and crappy anime, Japanese or not. While the dubs almost always suck, there used to be a lot of different jp anime airing till five years ago or so.

Without even speaking of the history of France with anime and how we’re the nonJapanese anime master race with Italy, around 15 years ago now, in a span of a few years, one channel aired Evangelion, Escaflowne, FMA, Excel Saga, GTO, Monster, Samurai Champloo (only one year after it aired in japan or even less) and more. There was tons of other anime on other channels too. Though the dubs sucked most of the time,it was still cool. Gankustuou even aired on tv here too, cuz muh Monte-Cristo French culture. Then around 3 years ago, I don’t know what happened, but now every channel only airs either Naruto or Fairy Tail. There’s still that one channel reairing old anime from 25+ years ago, but besides Nolife no one airs anime different than ultra popular things now. (Without counting children anime in the mornings like the new Beyblade and the occasional rebroadcast of Princess Sarah,Heidi,Attacker You, etc)

Almost every new French produced anime sucks too. Wakfudofus anime are apparently good but I never watched them. The new Taiyou no Ko Esteban series sucked.  Then there’s Marathon who used to do good shows like Totally Spies or Martin Mystère, but now they do crap like Lolirock: A multimedia show copying Sailor Moon and Purikyua and mixing it with music. Even Jem and the holograms was better than this. Don’t watch Lolirock if you value yourself.

Anyway, Nolife did a Gundam night and since they actually aired G Reco.

I was busy, so I only watched all of it now. They also managed to interview Tomino and Yoshida, as in Nolife themselves,  not some interview from another source. I summarized what they say since it’s interesting.

Gundam G no Reconguista 26 END

Well everyone lives except Chikkara, and I’m pretty sad for her. I wish she had lived to hang out on earth and live happily ever after with everyone. I’m really REALLY happy Manny didn’t end up dying, or no one else. Ringo actually shoot down Jurgen. Cumpa died in one of the most hilariosu deaths ever. Wilmit actually didn’t die. No one good actually die. And yet the final battle was so tense and awesome. This is the best thing ever.

The epilogue IS fast paced, and Tomino did say he apologize for it being rushed at the event screening of the final ep, but that’s because it doesn’t have any reason not to. Idiots will say this show the show was rushed, but it really wasn’t.  Tomino just wanted to show the things he had to show, that’s it. It would have been unnecessary to drag the epilogue, and the show has already shown since episode 1 that it expects you to use your brain to connects the dots. Even if some didn’t have lines, almost every character is shown in the epilogue doing something, hinting at what they’ll do next. That ending was perfect. Everything I wanted happened. Manny didn’t die and is happily living with Luin. Luin got over his hypocrisy as he finally defeated Bell. G Self got destroyed. Bell went to see the world. Aida became queen. Lowenthal& Kun joined the Megafauna… Everything is perfect.

No pictures as I watched it live as I was really really hyped about how the ending would turn out and I was fully satisfied. I’m super hyped about the ending and had to write something now. Also I did quickly see some interviews before the show started, hence how I knew Aida would become a leader or her and Bellri beings siblings, but I was restraining myself while the show was airing. Time to check every side material and interviews and whatever now. Plus even if I love the show, unlike Pretty Rhythm, everyone and their dog are already translating everything so I just have to serve myself. I’ll probably end up double checking some things though.

Gundam G no Recnoguista 25

g reco 25 luin without the mask

This episode was so awesome.

I don’t like how Manny just gave up persuading Mask though. He just doesn’t accept the fact that he’s less competent that Bellri and tries to find (fake) reasons for it. She knows he’s wrong but she decided to go along with it anyway. This made a bit unhappy, but then right after Mashner going singing crazy disney villain was hilarious.

And then Kun and Chikara’s interactions were hilarious. I just knew Tomino would use Chikara’s workout to show how they’re unaccustomed to the Earth gravity so it made me really happy when it happened. And that “aaaah so this is war” was hilarious. And then Ringo using the situation to cling to Raraiya was hilarious too. If only this ep could have been the last one, with everyone hugging each other during atmospheric entry and going on earth and living happily forever after. The scenes with Luin x Manny and KURIMU NIKKU x MIKKU JAKKU were perfect. Also I really thought they’d  go full everyone dies there and make the Megafauna gets shot down.

I guess Aida will be the one the make people stop fighting since she’s supposed to become queen and all. If she manages to find a solution while they fight before anyone dies it’ll be perfect. I really don’t want to but Klim will probably bite it next week… I also really really REALLY hope Bellri doesn’t push the “main character in gundam must kill his rival’s love interest” button inside the G Self’s cockpit. I’m sick of this pattern. Final episode, how many people die  and how they die will be a huge aspect to determine if this show is a masterpiece or not for me. I’m really tense for the final episode.

Gundam G no Reconguista – 22-23

g reco 22 noredo raraiya every girl is best girl

Man episode 23 was the funniest yet.  Instead of making things more serious because we’re in the final battle they made things even more hilarious. You’re not forced to kill people or make everything dead serious to put in tension or make things interesting. I love this show so much.
People did die though.

Gundam G no Reconguista – 20

greco 2004

So the sewing woman is called Annette. I really like her for some reason. She doesn’t seem to care about anything. She just sews their suits and live her life. Even in the ED among the women she’s the only one not looking particularly genki. She just doesn’t care about anything. Really nice how they actually mentioned she fixed the hole in Bell’s pilotsuit made by the syringe. Most shows wouldn’t have brought it up. It also served as a way to show some Aida x Bell too.

greco 2005 greco 2006

From the way things are going, Noredo will certainly end up piloting something. Hopefully things won’t be as predictable and I’m wrong. Hopefully she doesn’t get Genki’ed by Bellri in a tragic turn of events. I’m sick of (artificial newtype) cute girls dying which is why I haven’t watched Unicorn. One of the reasons I like G Reco so much is because it’s finally different than the usual pattern of:
starts in space
boy drops in a gundam
randomly falls in love with a girl
drops to earth
meets good people in the opposing faction
(artificial newtype) girl gets genki’ed
goes back to space
final battle

That’s also one of the reasons why Gundam Yugioh Tsubasa no Go Fighters was my favorite show of 2014 with Rainbow Live. It was a breath of fresh air just like G Reco.

Bell almost killing himself in space this week trying to get into the G Self is the reason why they showed us the spatial localization in space training thing last episode. Else this scene or all the talk about the Venus spheres being gigantic and stuff would have been harder to get.

greco 2010

“Why did I hesitate?”
Because you’re a good girl and even though there’s human bombs in this episode, (sasuga Tomino, I haven’t seen Zambot 3 yet but I know this much thanks to SRW) you couldn’t ruin the GENKI and kill off a character now. I guess she just didn’t want to needlessly kill someone. Actually if I saw correctly she did off a few of the police MS, but at distance. Maybe it’s actually her first real battle. And actually hearing Raraiya’s screams since she wire-rocket punched her made her react like so.

greco 2011greco 2017

She was crying because of her mistake too. Man Kun is cute. Chikkara too.
inb4 people going “Tomino is sexist, because Kun failed and she’s the one acting girly and putting on make up, while Chikkara who acts manly was awesome sabering stuff while Kun just cried over her mistake.” Well, that’s not true! Chikkara is super girly too. She must take real good care of her hair.

greco 2013greco 2014

My sides. Plz Tomino give Kerbes and Ringo an happy end and don’t make them die. Why is Kerbes such a bro. Why Ringo’s hair is so gorgeous? The only hair beating Chikkara’s hair and Bellri/Aida parents hair is Ringo’s.
How Raraiya puts back Ringo back in place telling him she went to Earth alone makes me realize Raraiya is probably the most experienced out of the three. At the very least she’s just as good as them. Raraiya didn’t get to talk with Flaminia yet because of the fight, it’ll happen next week surely.

greco 2015greco 2016greco 2020greco 2019

This week’s episode left us with such a cliffhanger. Gaen with tons of sabers and stuff sure is cool, it’s gonna be so awesome if G Reco gets in SRW. Really looking forward to next week for the rest of the fight.
Also I really liked how they did the stomping cheer thing again.

Gundan G no Reconguista 18

g reco bell aida comic

Source This person posts fun comics like that every week.
Big sister! I wanted to meet you!
Wai- What are you doing suddenly Bell?
That’s mean… I’m just so happy after meeting with my older sister… I’m your only little brother you know? I can at least hug you right?
…I guess so. I’m sorry Bell. As the sole survivors of the rayhunton house we should help each other
Yes big sis!

I love how everyone interacts with everyone. Episode 17 and 18 were so hilarious, and judging from the jikai it’s continuing in 19 too. This is gonna be my favorite show of 2014-2015 by far.

So contrary to what I said last time, Towasanga really turned out to be behind the moon, not on it. So the subs weren’t wrong. In any case, that was just a detail. Rewatching episode 14 made me notice a way bigger error in the subs. Mashner at the end says that if the Earthlings go to Towasanga they’ll be able to capture them there with the forces they left there, not that they’ll let the earthlings capture their forces on Towasanga. Which makes sense as next episode Mashner pursues them to Towasanga. I think that’s the only time I’ve seen such a big error. The biggest problems of the English official subs are:

1/Being too literal. An example in episode 16, Kurimu says that the Hazm government ruling Towasanga and the army have “their own circumstances”. This is literally what he says in Japanese, and they translated it as such. But in this case, the actual meaning is that the two of them don’t get along.
2/Bad grammar.

I’m sure that these two problems with the official English subs are  the main reason some people still find the show confusing. Anyone would find the show confusing at the beginning, but then around episode 4 it really isn’t. Though I wonder if people who found the show confusing past episode 4 are still watching at this point anyway. We’re already at episode 18. Time goes so fast.

Recently I started watching ths show with the official French subs instead, and they’re much better. I think the person(s) in charge of it translate directly from Japanese instead of from the official English subs, else it would have the same problems.
